UKAS 2025 audit success
As the industry-leading body offering registration schemes for the solid fuel and biomass sector, HETAS is always striving to provide the highest level of service to the schemes that we provide and administer.
UKAS (the United Kingdom Accreditation Service) undertake annual audits for the HETAS competent person scheme and microgeneration certification schemes (MCS) for installers and products, and we are proud to announce that we have passed our 2025 audit.
Maintaining accreditation
HETAS operates its competent person scheme under authorisation from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) and it is audited by UKAS under the certification standard BS EN ISO 17065:2012.
This authorisation and oversight mean we are governed by an external, impartial set of rules and regulations which we must follow in order to maintain accreditation for our competent person scheme.
UKAS audits
HETAS offers schemes for installers, retailers, sweep and service technicians, and product approval. The competent person scheme and MCS are subject to UKAS annual audits to retain accreditation, as per the first condition of authorisation. The independent, impartial audits undertaken by UKAS ensure HETAS continues to comply with standards and specific scheme requirements.
Audits examine various parts of our business to ensure compliance, similar to how we regularly check registrants’ compliance. The aim of UKAS audits is to independently verify that, as a company, we continue to comply with standards and specific scheme requirements.
For members registered with HETAS for our competent person scheme, the rules and regulations cover various areas, including:
- Refresher training (every five years)
- A minimum of £2,000,000 public liability insurance
- The need for regular, ongoing surveillance
The full conditions of authorisation document (last updated April 2016) details the full twenty-one requirements which HETAS, as a scheme administrator, must comply with.
2025 audit
Our annual audit for 2025 was completed over the course of four days (two days in February and two days in March), and was a more in-depth audit than the three years prior. This is due to this year’s audit being a reaccreditation, meaning the auditors assessed more case studies, business records, and documents in their thorough audit.
Three different UKAS auditors completed the audit, and we are pleased to announce that we have passed our audit for 2025.
The feedback we received from the UKAS audit panel was very positive and our discussions have helped us on our mission to continue supporting and adding value to our registered businesses and the wider industry.
What the audits mean for you
As a HETAS registrant, the continued audit successes we achieve as an organisation also reflect on you. Our commitment to being an industry-leading body in the solid fuel and biomass industry means we must adhere to the conditions of authorisation, set by the government, and ensure our registrants are able to complete their work to the highest standards.
HETAS recognises the importance of ensuring the procedures and systems we have in place are robust and remain impartial, and the recent successful audits confirms that we are continuing to do so – something that is as important as ever as the building sector comes under more scrutiny.
Our audit clearly displayed our passion for the solid fuel industry and our continuous efforts to strive to do better. We take our work seriously, and our audit revealed the comprehensiveness of our complaints processes, highlighting their thoroughness and impartiality.
The continued support of our dedicated registrants, supporting us in working towards a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable environment is appreciated and ensures we can keep leading industry and setting the highest standards.
