Why do I need a certificate of compliance?
Customers using a HETAS Registered Installer in England and Wales will receive either a HETAS Certificate of Compliance (Building Regulation Compliance Certificate) from the installer on the completion of installation work or through the post if the installer notifies the installation online. Your installer will let you know which method of certification they will be using. What is the best way to light my fire?
Lighting a fire can sometimes be difficult and there are countless guides on the internet. The HETAS team has pulled together the best guidance available so you can get it right first time. When should I have my chimney swept?
HETAS encourage having your chimney swept at least twice a year when burning wood or bituminous house coal and at least once a year when burning smokeless fuels. The best times to have your chimney swept are just before the start of the heating season and after your stove has not been used over a prolonged period. If sweeping twice a year, the second time should be after the peak of the main heating season. You should also have your stove serviced regularly alongside having your chimney swept. The HETAS Cleaner Choice Approval Scheme is unique in that HETAS is a third party independent and impartial certification body that relies on first-hand review of test data from notified laboratories in checking that each appliance meets, and in critical areas, exceeds some of the most stringent limits set by tested standards and test methods. The HETAS Cleaner Choice Approval Scheme, while focused on particulate emissions, also provides the consumer and installer assurance that the appliance listed meets all the relevant regulations in the UK as before, including safety and performance requirements, correct operation, and correct installation for HETAS installers.

What do I do if I have concerns?
HETAS is concerned with the safety, technical standard and compliance to Building Regulations of the work carried out by its Registrants.
All registrants are required to undertake specific training and be routinely assessed to be registered with HETAS. This helps us ensure that installers are carrying out safe and compliant installations.
We do however understand that complaints can arise from time to time. Where HETAS investigates a complaint, we are aiming to establish whether the so installation meets regulations and is complaint, if any areas of non-compliance are identified, the registrant will be tasked with addressing this We aim to act in a proportionate, fair and independent manner. Please note we have no legal power to compel either registrants or consumers to act and the HETAS complaints process sits aside of any consumer rights.
